And On The Fourth Day

We’re driving north on the interstate, about half an hour from Lansing. Forty-five minutes late for load-in, and the sound check is at 4:00 pm.
Nobody seems overly concerned. You have to wonder if a bit of that “we are the talent, not the staff” sort of relaxed, arrogant attitude is beginning to show. Personally, I just want to bang on the piano all day.
I’ve just been informed that I have no stage riser tonight. It happens from time to time. It’s not that big of a deal because when I don’t have one, neither does Barry. Except he does have one this time. There will be three Lowland Gorillas standing in front of me, with Barry up high on my left.. I’ll be the little weasel sitting down, blending into the backdrop. You know……The least cool person on stage. Fine. Fuck em.
Tonight I Dance!

4:50 pm
I’m starving. There hasn’t been much of anything to eat this trip. Things are looking better, though. I was actually asked about my food preferences. Well, lunch food, but I’ll take it. I ordered a Tuna sandwich on a multigrain bun and some kind of fu-fu soup.

4:55 pm
Lunch just arrived. The soup is orange. What would make it orange? Pumpkin?
As well as requesting a vegetarian soup, I should also have stipulated a colour. Or at least ruled out certain ones. Teal, chartreuse, pink, black — These are all colours that soup shouldn’t be. And orange, of course.
Oh shit, soundcheck just started. I’ll eat later.

I Need A Drink

6:15 pm
Soundcheck is over, and I’m going on an expedition to find a jug of Vodka.

7:00 pm
I found some vodka after an almost 30-minute return trip. It’s hot out there. Apparently, it reached 88 degrees today. On October 3!!!!!
Someone ate my sandwich.

The Mysterious Case Of The Invisible Keyboards

7:27 pm
Waiting to go on at 8 pm.

10:30
I aced it. Everything worked as intended. I was very close to having a perfect game. It didn’t hurt that the rest of the band had a great night as well. It was a moment of pride and satisfaction for all of us. The audience enthusiasm was over the top. Standing ovation! Twice!
